What is shower powder and how can it be used?
Shower powder as an environmentally friendly alternative to liquid soaps
Manufacturers of eco-friendly cosmetics and care products are committed to making products more environmentally friendly, sustainable and climate-friendly. They are doing this on many levels. One of the most notable trends in sustainable personal care is the development of dry products. Since the water content of many products can be up to 90 percent, water is an enormous factor in transport: if you reduce the water content in the products, you also reduce the weight and volume considerably. And that in turn saves CO2 and packaging material.
Shower powder: the environmentally friendly alternative to liquid shower gel
"If you use shower powder instead of shower gel, you don't have to do without the pleasant feeling and scent of shower gel," reports Carina Benkert, Managing Director of the natural cosmetics manufacturer Jolu. "After all, with shower powder you can easily make your own shower gel." All you have to do is add water to the dry product. Then a pleasantly scented end product is created that is no different from conventional shower gel. Apart from the eco-balance, of course: in addition to the positive effects during transport, shower powders like those from Jolu can be transported, stored and sold completely plastic-free - simply in packaging made of cardboard and paper. For liquid soaps and shampoos, on the other hand, plastic or glass containers are mandatory. These can also be recycled, but more energy and water are needed, the environment is polluted more and the raw materials for their production do not grow back.
Shower powder lightens the load of wastewater treatment
Showering produces wastewater - and environmentally friendly natural cosmetics can make a difference in that too. "Not only raw material cultivation, production and transport are important for the eco-balance of a product," Carina Benkert emphasises. "All substances that come into contact with the skin and enter the water cycle should be very carefully selected." For example, Jolu avoids harmful silicones, parabens and microplastics in the manufacture of its vegan products. This not only helps to reduce health risks but also has a positive effect when it comes to reprocessing.
